The manuscript contains copies of the historical tracts Ystoria Dared, Brut y Brenhinoedd and Brut y Tywysogion. The manuscript was not consulted by the editors of the Myfyrian Archaiology of Wales in the preparation of their edition of the Brutiau for volume II of that work and may have been unknown to them. It was used by Thomas Jones to provide text in some sections of his edition of Brut y Tywysogion or The Chronicle of the Princes: Red Book of Hergest Version, and to provide variant readings in others.

J. Gwenogvryn Evans (1898-1910: 56) claims that the pages containing Brut y Tywysogion (142-end) were written earlier than the pages containing Ystoria Dared and Brut y Brenhinoedd, and points out that the extensive verbal agreement between the texts in this manuscript and those contained in the later Red Book of Hergest (Jesus 119) make it likely that the scribe of the Red Book copied his text from this manuscript. The similarity extends to division of chapters, orthographical variation, and slips and omissions. Thomas Jones doubts that this manuscript represents a copy of the Red Book: "a detailed examination of the readings of M compared with those of R has proved to me that this view of the relationship between the two MSS. is untenable" (Jones 1955: xxiv). The text of Brut y Tywysogion is incomplete, with one gathering missing at the end.

The following texts were consulted during transcription:

  • Evans, J. Gwenogvryn and Rhŷs, John. eds. 1890. The Text of the Bruts from the Red Book of Hergest. Oxford: J.G. Evans.
  • Jones, Thomas. ed. 1955. Brut y Tywysogyon or The Chronicle of the Princes: Red Book of Hergest Version. Cardiff: University of Wales Press.

Supplied text in Ystoria Dared and Brut y Brenhinoedd is taken from Evans and Rhŷs (1890).Supplied text in Brut y Tywysogion is taken from Jones (1955).

Page numbering is in the top right hand corner of each folio, in black ink, in a sixteenth-century hand.

The foliator has neglected to assign the number 7 to the appropriate page, but there is no lacuna in the text between pages 6v and 8r.

There are two pages numbered 138. These have been numbered 138A and 138B in this edition.

Page 142r has what could be a separate page number, 680, in the top right corner. This number appears to be in the same sixteenth century hand as the rest of the page numbers. As the manuscript has been cropped this may have been part of a marginalium that is now lost.

At page 153, page numbering begins to appear in a modern hand in pencil in the top right corner of the recto pages, duplicating that in the sixteenth century hand.

Catchwords are occasionally found in the bottom right hand corner of the page. Others may have been cut off during binding. All catchwords are in the hand of the main scribe unless otherwise noted. With the exception of the first and last examples, all the catchwords above have been encircled. At 33v <tus> and <y vrutus> are separately encircled. Examples may be seen at: 9v: baraỽt, 17v: marchogyon, 32r: bỽell, 33v: tus y vrutus, 41v: ynywed, 49v: Ac ym pen, 57v: Ac odyna kymry, 64v: dyfot, 75v: wys, 87v: ar gefyn, 99v: ac ny la, 112v: o warwic, 121v: ỽybot, 129v: arall, 137v: y orymdeith, 149v: diaỽd, 156v: o gỽbyl, 164v: wythyr, 178v: saỽc o, 190v: ytoedynt, 198v: drỽy genat

The manuscript is in good condition, though page 1r is darkened, possibly due to exposure, as is page 141v.

Folio 142 is ripped almost in half, and page 206v is considerably darkened, perhaps indicating that the manuscript existed in two separate parts for a considerable time before being bound together.

Some of the writing on page 1r has been retraced in black ink, possibly in the same sixteenth-century hand that is responsible for many of the marginalia. The manuscript has been cropped and while the main text is unaffected, many of the marginalia have become wholly or partially lost.

Folio 108 consists of a smaller piece of vellum inserted into the manuscript containing a missing passage. There is contemporary writing only on the verso. The passage should be placed after the text ending at 109r.9, as indicated by cross-shaped insertion marks.

Folio 184r/184v has been cropped in the bottom left/right corner but this has not affected the text.

Folio 135r/135v has a hole in the right/left margin spanning lines 13-15.

The bottom right corner of page 135r/bottom left corner of page 135v has been ripped out.

Folio 142r/142v is ripped almost in half at line 13. Folio 145r/145v has a small tear at line 20.

The text is written in a single column of text. Each page contains between 23 and 30 lines of text, with 30 lines being the most common number.

The manuscript is written in the late-fourteenth-century rounded textura hand of an unidentified scribe. J. Gwenogvryn Evans notes that this scribe also wrote British Library Additional 19709 (1898-1910: 62). This scribe has been given the designation 'X92' by Daniel Huws. This designation has been used for the purposes of this transcription.
‘X92’

The script is characterised by a number of letter forms which are either unique or at times difficult to interpret. At times <o> and <y> are almost indistinguishable from one another, e.g. in <chỽfent> 112v.5.

At times <v> and <y> are almost indistinguishable from one another, e.g. in <ỽrth> 104r.29.

This scribe uses both regular and medial <a>. The medial <a> often serves almost as a capital, and is commonly found at the beginning of names and clauses.

The difference between some of the capitals and smaller forms may be slight. This is especially so when the capital is simply a slightly larger version of the smaller form. Examples of such capitals are:

  • <H> 118r.6
  • <J> 9v.15
  • <K> 105r.30
  • <S> 118r.7
  • <V> 9v.7, 119r.23, 176v.23
  • <Y> 11r.4

The scribe uses many ligatured letters, including ligatured <bb>, <ll>, <lb>, <lh>, <pp> and <ct>. The last form is often difficult to interpret as it is often indistinguishable from <cc>, e.g. at:

  • ector 14v.10
  • octa 118r.12
  • dryccyo 84r.15
  • andromacca 9r.15, 14r.4, 14r.7
  • varchocca 87r.22
  • hetto 87r.23
  • dylyedocca 92v.10
  • ketymdeithoccau 129v.13-14, 133r.23
  • vydychoccau 138Bv.22
  • thrugaroccaf 149r.4
  • gyhoededicca 183r.14

Though words are separated by clearly distinguishable spaces throughout most of the manuscript, it is not always clear whether items are to be taken to represent one word or two.

A particular feature of this scribe is his almost general tendency to represent /f/ with <f>. Other notable features include:

  • <ff> for /v/, e.g. araff 21r.8, 70v.7; argyffreu 38r.29; coff 39r.18, 90v.10; kyffeillon 22r.30; kyffreideu 5r.24-25; chyffanhedu 24v.1; vỽyaff 34r.5, 54r.14, 68r.11, 129r.7 etc.; eff 18v.30, 35r.25, 43v.16, 48r.15, 72v.14, 89r.19, 98v.12, 104v.11, 109r.17 etc.; gyntaff 19v.13; hynaff 39r.8-9; [y]seff 27v.15, 32v.10, 98v.2, 110r.17, 117v.14
  • <ll> for /l/, e.g. amryfaylloon 133r.18; kyllch 157r.22; diholl 68v.15; dirgell 157r.10; hollaỽll 104v.13; hỽyllassant 205r.2; millỽryaeth 122v.9
  • <td> for /d/, e.g. dylyetdogyon 114r.9; newitdyaỽ 103r.1; rootdres 110r.8
  • <ỽw> for /w/, e.g. aỽwyrolyon 31r.3; gỽeỽwyr 50r.19; llaỽwer 58v.5

The spelling of many names shows considerable variation. We have not drawn attention to such names with <sic> tags as in most cases the identity of names is clear enough not to need explanation. The spelling of a certain names may vary throughout the text.

The text contains a number of common abbreviations. These have been expanded in the transcription to the forms that are given elsewhere in the text itself rather than to standard or dictionary forms.

Punctuation in this hand consists of the punctus and the punctus elevatus. Crosses in the left margin at 121v.13 to the word <foynt> at 121v.14 probably indicate that the underlined text in these lines is meant to be deleted.

In some places it is obvious that the scribe has skipped from one line to another because the same word appears in successive lines. Modern published editions of the text from other sources make apparent the aberrant reading in this manuscript. Examples may be seen at:

The decoration consists in the main of large decorated initials in red ink.

The inside of the front cover contains a Gloddaeth Library bookplate. The number 93 has been written on the bookplate in a modern hand, possibly that of J. Gwenogvryn Evans, identifying it as MS. 93 in that collection.

The bottom of page 23v contains a large drawing of a six-sided star, spanning some 25 lines. There is a cross above the large initial <A> on page 108v, which matches up with a similar cross in the right margin of 109r at line 9, indicating that the text on 108v is to be inserted at that point.

A unique set of fillers joined together by a squiggly line is to be found at 51v.18.

A drawing of a hand appears in the left margin of page 200v.

In many places where there are coloured initial letters, the scribe has indicated what the letter should be with a smaller form which appears behind the initial. Examples may be seen at: 101v.16 and 114v.19.

Readers’ marks are to be found in the margins at 119r RM.3, 120r RM.16, 120v LM.21, 145v LM.2, 146v IL.20 (above <nac>), 148r RM.19, 154r RM.8, 154v LM.7, 156r IL.12-13 (above <wahan redaỽl>), 156r IL.15-16 (above <vchtryt>), 156r RM.17, 156v RM.21, 157v LM.10, 163v LM.12, 166r RM.4, 167v LM.16, 167v LM.19, 168r RM.7, 173v LM.12 and 175r RM.22.

Paragraph marks in the hand of the main scribe in red ink are to be found in the margins at 168r RM.15 and 168r RM.24.

The manuscript contains some underlining in black ink, probably of the sixteenth century and possibly in the same hand as the page numbering and the sixteenth century marginal additions. The underlining usually serves to mark out names of characters as well as the beginnings of sentences. This feature has not been encoded.

The following marginalia, mostly in later hands, have not been included in the transcription:

The manuscript is accompanied by a note containing a list of the contents in a modern hand, possibly that of J. Gwenogvryn Evans: 'This Book contains Geoffrey of Monmouth's British History and Brut y Brenhinoedd and Brut y Tywysogion by 'Caradoc of llancarfan' It is much soild and imperfect.'

The manuscript dates from the middle of the fourteenth century (Huws 2000: 60).

The manuscript once formed part of the Mostyn library at Gloddaeth as evidenced by the Gloddaeth Library bookplate on the inside of the front cover, where it is identified as MS. 93.

A modern hand, possibly that of J. Gwenogvryn Evans, identifies the manuscript as 'MS No 116' in the top centre of the page, and as 'NLW MS 3035 B' in the top right corner. The figures 'H/2b' in the top left corner are difficult to interpret.

Information on the dating and hand of this manuscript is based on the following authorities:

The Welsh Prose 1350-1425 website is the product of an AHRC funded research project undertaken by staff at the School of Welsh, Cardiff University from 2004 through 2007 called Corff Electronig o Ryddiaith Cymraeg Canol. The aim of this project was to produce machine-readable editions of all the medieval Welsh prose texts which have been preserved in manuscripts dating from c.1350 to c.1425.

The project is a continuation and a development of two previous projects funded by the University of Wales which transcribed the Welsh prose in manuscripts dated to c.1250-c.1350.

The intention is to give scholars access not only to texts that have hitherto remained unedited but also to the different versions of texts that have been the subject of critical editions.

Certain decorative features have been encoded: these may trigger further study of the original manuscripts. Primarily, however, the resource provides detail which it is hoped will further the study of the language and literature of the period.

In producing this edition, we have attempted to fulfil two different and often non-complementary if not opposing goals: to present a minimally edited edition of the text, and to represent as many visual features of the manuscript as possible.

Visual features of the text such as layout, and rubrication may prove to be as essential in textual interpretation as features such as punctuation, letter forms, capitalisation and word division, which are more usually invoked by scholars in the field.

The orthography of the original text has been maintained, even where it is idiosyncratic, as the unique characteristics of the scribe's spelling may shed light upon the language of the period as he, his audience, or patron used it. Where the scribe's orthography seems to merit particular attention, an editorial gloss has been added to indicate what we believe to have been the target form.

In some places, especially where the manuscript is damaged, we have supplied text. This serves the two-fold purpose of presenting a complete text and, perhaps more importantly, of indicating the size of the damaged area.

In order to make editorial intervention as transparent as possible, supplied text is clearly marked off from the manuscript text by a different font. Also in the spirit of editorial transparency, we have wherever possible used published editions for supplied text. Text supplied from published editions may suffer from obvious errors or significant differences in orthography from the manuscript text. We have refrained from imposing our own editorial actions on such features.

The transcription of this manuscript, as well as the information in this TEI header, is based on the microfilm reproduction of the manuscript produced by the National Library of Wales in 1996. As we have not checked the transcription against the original, information on the matters such as colour scheme and ornamentation should be treated as provisional.
